If you think the news should be a dispassionate list of the day's events, then you're in the right place; it's my attempt at a blog. Yes, it is sub-standard.
I am an (un)accomplished acoustician and currently loving it, despite the occasional working time.
Also, I never fully complete my to-do list for the day. Maybe someday?

Thanks for making me feel bad, Instapaper.

Thanks for making me feel bad, Instapaper.

I’ve just updated my bookmarklet. I think it’s broken.

Is this the kind of thing that gets you banned from Tumblr and Instapaper?

Readability is great. As you may know, I have Instapaper and use it probably too often (when I want something for later but don’t want to save the tab or bookmark it). The other week I was doing some bookmark spring-cleaning and thought maybe I should delete Readability since, with Instapaper right next to it, it is complete overkill. However it is a totally different beast. When you want to read something right now but don’t want the distractions of adverts, other articles, and all the other clutter that has found its way onto the internet, you need the former. If you want something for later with the previous possibility, go for the latter. It’s so useful. And customisable too. What are you waiting for?

It's Finished

You reach for your purse or wallet and take out your last note. Something about it doesn’t feel quite right. It’s the wrong shape or the wrong colour and the design is odd too and the note just doesn’t seem right and… By now you’ve realised: oh shit! It’s the dreaded Scottish banknote!

(thanks, Peter)

Fast-forward 300 years, and RBS is today, by the size of its assets, not just a big bank, and not just one of the biggest companies in Europe. The Royal Bank of Scotland, by asset size, is the biggest company in the world. If I had to pick a single fact which summed up the cultural gap between the City of London and the rest of the country, it would be that one. I have yet to meet a single person not employed in financial services who was aware of it; I wasn’t aware of it myself. I think if I had been, there are two questions I would have wanted answered: how did that happen? And is it a good thing?

If you have several minutes to spare, this article is well worth reading to get a firmer grasp on the econo-splosion that has destroyed the chance of most of us getting a decent job any time soon. Not that I’m bitter or anything.

If you don’t have a little free time, get Instapaper now. Or watch this.

Trust me; do all three.

New text-parser updates

instapaper:

  • Fixed issues with Reuters, Bloomberg, Blogger, BoingBoing, LA Times, New York Times, Times Online UK, Touch Arcade, and Huffington Post.

This is still very much in beta, but it’s getting there. Thanks, everyone.

Emphasis mine. Much rejoicing.

Three things about Marco Arment

(and a couple things about you, me, and a metaphorical horse)

Yes. Long. Again. Deal. Thanks.

This is definitely worth a read, even if you have to hit ‘Read Later.’

If, like me, you use Instapaper a lot, then you will also use the Print link on pages that you want to save. In general, this gives better results and ignores things like comments and blurbs at the bottom of the page. This link is especially useful now that the new text parser is including some images in the downloaded articles; you don’t want any ads included, surely? However the problem with the link is its location. Every publisher puts it in a different position. How to solve this?

The Print Friendly bookmarklet. Just drag that link into your toolbar and if you click it while using a valid website it will automatically take you to the print friendly page.

Obviously this draws the question of “What sites work?” Well, imaginary questioner:

It should be noted that The Atlantic only works for the magazine section, and the bookmarklet isn’t completed tested. It took me all day to do and I’ll be damned if I spend another minute on it.

Anyway this was just an arbitrary list drawn up from what was kicking around my unread folder. If you have any requests feel free to email me or submit a message.

Hope you enjoy!
